Philippe Suchard, often credited with creating the iconic image of Swiss chocolate, played a pivotal role in shaping the chocolate industry. Born in Switzerland, Suchard began his career as an apprentice confectioner in his brother’s confiserie in Bern, where he honed his skills. His first encounter with chocolate was when his ailing mother sent him to an apothecary in Neuchâtel to procure a pound of chocolate to incorporate into a tonic for her health. This experience sparked a lifelong passion for chocolate, setting the stage for his future endeavors.
In 1825, Suchard opened his first confectionery shop in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. Starting with a modest production of 25 to 30 kilograms of chocolate bars daily, aided by a single assistant, Suchard’s business quickly gained traction. His innovative approach to chocolate-making was evident in his design of specialized equipment, which utilized water power to drive the machines, significantly improving efficiency. The following year, Suchard moved his operations to an empty mill in Serrières, where he built his own chocolate factory, marking the beginning of an industrial empire.
Suchard was not only a pioneer in chocolate production but also in worker welfare. In 1846, he established an Alpine village for Swiss immigrants to the USA, demonstrating his commitment to social responsibility. The arrival of the railway in Serrières in 1860 further boosted his business, facilitating the transportation of his products across Switzerland and beyond.
Suchard capitalized on Switzerland’s abundant milk supply, which provided a cost-effective raw material for his chocolate production. This strategic move solidified Switzerland’s reputation as a leading chocolate producer. In 1878, Suchard applied for his British trademark for Chocolat Suisses, cementing his brand’s international presence.
The Suchard company merged with Tobler in 1970 and later with Jacobs in 1992. In 1993, Jacobs Suchard was acquired by Kraft General Foods International, marking the end of an era for the iconic Swiss brand. Today, Philippe Suchard’s legacy lives on as Swiss chocolate continues to be synonymous with quality and innovation.
